I currently have 4 pieces worked out, color-studied, transferred onto canvases, and ready to move over to my easel. I'm normally a "one piece at a time" kind of gal, but painting commences on several of these today. I want 3 done by the end of the month. I have no idea if this is possible.

I'm back on my "stay up all night working and sleep for a few hours in the afternoon" schedule in a pretty hardcore sort of way... I have tried to break this cycle so many times, but I always seem to work my way back around the clock to this nocturnal life. I'm trying to just officially embrace it, as it's obviously how I work best. Also, I've been watching The History Channel's show "Ancient Aliens" on Netflix while I've been up by myself all night working - some of the ideas they talk about are actually interesting and fun to think about, while others are just historical or biblical references followed by a "...but what if aliens were involved?" It can get silly. Regardless though, my 4 AM google searches are becoming increasingly more and more bizarre.

I have exactly one more fun and mountainy thing for the summer left on my schedule and then after that I will scarcely be leaving my studio until November, so expect more randomishblibberblabber posts from me. And, I apologize in advance if you wake up one morning to a post from me discussing cattle mutilations, or crystal skulls, or the fact that the moon is actually a hollow vessel housing an extraterrestrial spacecraft. I won't be getting out much.

"I Open at the Close"

I'm a little bit appalled with myself over the fact that it has taken me this long to get this post up... my intention was to post it the day Deathly Hallows Part 2 was released, but things got totally craycray due to the whole "getting married the following day" bit. So, I decided to wait until today. Why? Because not only is it the famous Harry Potter's birthday today, but it's also the birthday of the lovely J.K. Rowling herself, and it seemed to be a fitting way to say "Happy Birthday!" and a good day to showcase this story that I have grown to love so much.

So, not to be Captain Obvious here or anything, but I think it's time I officially confess to you all that I have a bit of a thing for Harry Potter. Ok, OKAY, so maybe it's not so much of a "thing" as it is a... total and complete obsession? I'm totally outing myself here, but I am one of those folks that lined up for hours so they could be first in line at the midnight releases, one that has read each book multiple times (as well as listened to the audiobooks while painting way too many times to even keep track of), I am fairly certain that someone in my circle of friends has got some wonderfully drunk pictures of me dressed as Mr. Potter himself at a post-college Halloween party (it is also entirely possible that I kept my college graduation robe just incase I might end up needing any last minute Halloween costumes of the Hogwarts variety), and I could go on and on and on. So, when the fine folks over at Gallery Nucleus emailed me a year ago about participating in their Harry Potter Tribute Show, well, let me sum up my reaction by saying that I just about peed my pants.

"I Open at the Close"

I had already decided years ago (after finishing Book 7 for the first time, actually) that I would make this piece. The moments that transpire between Harry and his parents in the Forbidden Forest are at once so heartwarming and so completely heartbreaking, and there was never really any question of what part of the story I would choose to focus upon. (Though, really, I could fill an entire house with Potter pieces.... someone ask me to. please?) So, a big thank you to Gallery Nucleus for inviting me to participate in this show and giving me a reason to finally get this image out, and a monumental and heartfelt thank you to J.K. Rowling for giving the world Harry Potter in the first place. I know I'm just one among millions who feel that life is a bit better with all of these characters in it. :)

Oh and P.S. The show opening at Gallery Nucleus looks like it was a total blast (check out some images here), and it's definitely one that I wish I could have attended myself. You can check out all of the pieces that were on display here!

As The World Falls Down (Crazy4Cult FIVE)

Gallery 1988's fifth installment of their Crazy4Cult show opened earlier this month, and this year I chose the Jim Henson classic, "Labyrinth", as my inspiration.

"As The World Falls Down"

The decision to focus on the masquerade scene was partially influenced by my desire to use either a song lyric or a song name from the movie as the piece's title (I use to rock out to the "Labyrinth" soundtrack on my morning drives to high school - I'm not kidding), but mostly I just wanted to incorporate that DRESS. (sidenote: My hubby wasn't sure that people would recognize this image as a Labyrinth moment, to which I replied that he's bonkers crazy and that any girl who was a girl at the time knows good and well that this dress was one of THE best dresses to come out of the 80's... if not the best. sigh. silly boy. )

In other Crazy4Cult news, there is now a book showcasing highlights from the previous four installments of the show and I have work in it! It is a 176 page hardcover book packed with super fun cult movie art, and topped off with a forward by Kevin Smith, who has always played a big part in these shows. Gallery 1988 hosted an artist book signing a few weeks ago that I was invited to, but was very sad to have to miss out on (you can check out their own blog post covering it here), and if you purchase the book through their website your book will come signed by at least one of the featured artists. Get one. :)

A Skipperdee Makes a Very Good Hat!

So, this piece has actually been finished for several months now, but I think it definitely deserves to be posted! This one is a commissioned piece in which I was asked to do an image based on the commissioner's favorite children's book series from when she was little, "Eloise". Eloise is a precocious and quirky six year old girl who lives in the fabulous Plaza Hotel in New York City, and the books focus around all of the imaginative adventures she concocts for herself on a day to day basis. She also has a penchant for "making very good hats!" out of things that surely no one else would consider very good hats, hence her pet turtle, Skipperdee, residing on her head. These books are super fun and it was an equally fun piece to work on!

One note about commissions, because I do get emails about them from time to time... they are really hard to fit into an already established work schedule. That's not to say that I don't ever do them (this post proves otherwise!), it's just more to say that generally they will take much longer than other pieces to bring to a complete finish, because they end up squashed in between other deadlines or worked on in small chunks as time opens up. If I can't foresee a good chunk of open time in a year, often I will turn down commission requests since it is so hard to guarantee a "finished by" date. That being said, I do have one more on my plate for this year (don't worry, I haven't forgotten about you, James! ;) ).

Back to life, Back to reality

I debated whether or not to post this, because it's a bit more personal that what I usually share on this blog, but it's relevant to my year, so I decided I'm okay with it. I just got back from getting hitched to my bff of the last nine years and fellow arty nerdboy Josholland. We are finally resettled after having the most hectic month of our lives thus far and learning firsthand that all of the barfy cliches about planning a wedding are actually... 100% true. Somehow, as a girl who never cared about weddings, never fantasized about her "bigdayblahblahblah", and as someone who very likely scorned and looked down on the importance people put on this one party, somehow this one day managed to completely temporarily take over my brain and my life for a few months. I'm not complaining. I'm just saying it's funny. And, in retrospect, I suppose it's to be expected - it is the one day you get to make a completely acceptable big fuss out of the most important relationship in your life, might as well make it fun and worth all the trouble, yeah?

There are two reasons I'm posting this.

The first is to say that my brain is back to being mine, and that my creative energies can once again become devoted to nothing else but making lots and lots of artwork over the next few months (good timing too, I have a two person show rapidly approaching that I NEED to get my butt in gear for!).... soooo, hurrah! I have felt stretched very thin, creatively and otherwise, over the last few months, but now I am feeling super good and super excited to get back to the grindstone. :)

The second is to give a well deserved wedding related, but also art related, plug to some serious talent we discovered in our planning process - the lovely gal we hired to be our photographer. The really fun thing about weddings nowadays is that people are getting really artistic with how they execute and document them (I will maybe eventually share a couple of the things we made ourselves... if I decide that it would actually be the slightest bit interesting to anybody but me. ha. we'll see). Wedding photography (along with maybe every other wedding related thing in existence, actually) has a notoriously bad rep for being the most horribly cheasy looking stuff out there, but in the last few years this has really started to change. As someone who loves pretty images and whimsical things, I must say that I am a huge fan of this new trend. It's no joke when people say that the day passes you by like a big blur of a "maybe that happened?" memory, so having such a fantastic eye working behind the camera has so far been credited as the best decision we made. Melissa, the face behind Fresh in Love Photography, is an amazing artist with the ability to capture seemingly ordinary moments and make them look beyond wonderful and, REALLY, more people should know about her. She is awesome. So, if you are so inclined, go and oogle a sample of what she did for us here, and if you are getting married or just want some lovely images, hire her! She travels and is goobers of niceness too. (...goobers, Shannon? I have no idea.)

Anyways, so it's back to life and back to reality for me from here on out. Expect several new posts from me over the next week - there are a lot of new pieces that missed out on being properly blog-posted due to my terribly befuddled brain!

Holeeecrap, you guys. I have not posted since November! This is a really terribly not acceptable thing! I'm promising right now that I am remedying this moving forward (and hopefully not eating these words in another 4 months? ha). No, really, I promise. I'm back to regular posting.

So, what have I been up to? Well, I've been busy. My absence here has not at all been a reflection of what's been going in my life, it's more just that a lot of the things that have been keeping me occupied over the last several months haven't necessarily been blog worthy. I have been working a lot though, and I have several really fun projects in the works right now that will be popping up here soon enough, so... be on the look out. ;)

I just wrapped up my piece for the upcoming "Quentin vs. Coen" show on April 7th. The show is being put on by Spoke Art (the same fabulous folks who brought us the Wes Anderson show last year), but it's being hosted at Bold Hype Gallery in NYC. It's a pop-up style show (meaning it will only be up for a weekend), so definitely note that if you're in New York and you want to go, you only have 2 days to do so! I'm imagining this will be a reallyreallyrealllly fun show - I mean, how can over 100 artists celebrating the work of Quentin Tarantino and the Coen brothers be anything but ridiculously awesome?

Here is my piece - I did a simple little number based on my favorite Quentin Tarantino scene.

And, like I said, super fun projects coming up very soon. I have been excited about my next pop-culture inspired piece for literally the last year, and I am just about peeing my pants to actually start really digging my teeth into it. I don't want to give away too much yet though, so I'll just say that it starts with an "h" and ends with an "otter". Hell. yeah. ;)

On November 20th (this Saturday) I will have a piece in the Viva LA Art! "Art, Drinks & Music - Winter 2010" Auction. Via Viva LA Art's site, "100 percent of proceeds from the auction and $20 door donation will benefit CoachArt, a non-profit organization whose mission is to improve the quality of life for children with chronic and life-threatening illnesses by providing free, personal lessons in the arts and athletics. They do this by enlisting volunteers from the LA community who are willing to devote at least 1 day a week for 10 weeks to coach a chronically ill child in the art, hobby, or sport of their choice."

"Bad Dads" at Lopo Gallery - October 30th

I'll have a piece in the Wes Anderson tribute show "Bad Dads" - opening this Saturday (Halloween!) at the brand new Lopo Gallery in San Francisco. I devoted my piece to the lovely Margot, though I could honestly probably do about 12 more paintings about "The Royal Tenenbaums"... I can't even tell you how much I love that movie.

I got back from Columbus last week, and I had such a great time while I was out there. I went out for the opening at Rivet, saw some dear friends, met lots of nice folks, and overall just had a blast of a week while still managing to catch up on some much needed zzz's. ahhhh...

Anyhow, here's everything from the show. If you're a diligent follower of this silly blog o' mine (like I know you ALL are.... RIGHT???? ;) ), then you'll probably notice that 2 of the pieces are from earlier this year, but I included them in this group too because I thought they were a good fit.

Also, totally apologize if you've seen these elsewhere already. I try to space out the timing on the sites that I post stuff on so that it's not one huge annoying barrage of multi-posts all at the same time. There are WAY too many things to update now. I'm still waiting for someone to invent a site that will compile all of this social networking blahblah into one area... or does something like this already exist and I am just too out of touch to know about it?

WELL, it's coming up a bit quicker than I can even grasp right now, but in just a mere few weeks my show, "The Things We Have Lost", will be opening at Rivet Gallery in Columbus, Ohio! I'll be flying out there not only to attend the opening, but also to spend a bit of time in Columbus with some of my most excellent friends. That city, while it's definitely not my favorite place in the world (no offense, c-busers), certainly holds a few very special spots in my heart - a lot of my growing happened there and I always really love going back to visit.

So, the next few weeks will be nothing but workworkwork for me... I'm finishing up pieces that are already underway, banging through a couple more pieces, framing things, refinishing surfaces, scanning, packing, shipping, and on and on. Honestly, I'm considering injecting a caffeine iv drip straight into my blood stream. The need for sleep is such a major inconvenience to living!

In other news, I'm currently right on the cusp of some pretty major life changes... the kind of life changes that make you sick to your stomach scared and fingers tingling excited all at once. I'm sure I'll be talking more about it in the near future, but for now I'll just say that I'm about to be attempting to do things the way that I've wanted them done for a longlong time now. At moments I'm completely terrified and thinking I must be mad, but... this is it. I'm ready. Good things are about to happen.

"Crazy 4 Cult 4" and other stuff

It's that time of year again... Gallery 1988 LA's annual "Crazy 4 Cult" show is just on the horizon! Opening this Friday (July 9th), and once again hosted by Kevin Smith and Scott Mosier, it should be a blast!

This year I took on one of my very near and dear favorite movies, "Ghost World". Originally I had planned to do a diptych piece, one half Enid/one half Rebecca, buttttt..... well, let's just say that time is not always my friend, so Rebecca ended up getting the shaft. Sorry, Becky. :/

boy, it's been awhile. i promise the reason is busyness and not laziness! i have about a million projects going on at the moment, just in time for the lovely summerish weather that has been slowly creeping in. i should move somewhere with a porch so i can paint and enjoy the outdoors all at once.

here's a peak of one thing that i'm up to. more will be trickling in over the next few months.

on another note, i put up an art page on facebook finally. if you're like me and way too high of a percentage of your social life is spent over on that silly site, then clickity here and come "like" me! i'll be updating with new stuff frequently.

ok. i'm off to go sit on my bum at my easel for... hopefully a long time. ;)

Some Thoughts

No pics or anything this time. I'm taking a much needed few weeks break from the intense studio hours - I'll be back at it in about a week or so though! In the meantime I'm attempting to pay off some of my sleep debt (which seems to have come with a ridiculously high interest rate) and slowly getting my studio back in full order after the whole "ceiling nearly caving in and two months of repairs followed by too busy of a schedule to deal with it" debacle.

Really, I just wanted to write today because my interest and admiration was peaked, once again, by the lovely miss Audrey Kawasaki. There's been some debate going on over on her livejournal about one of her recent paintings, and I must say, even with the amount that I loveloveLOVE this girl's work, this debate, combined with Audrey's response, was a bit refreshing for me to read through. It, at the very least, confirmed to me why I admire her abilities so much.

One of my biggest qualms about this art genre that I love has always been the lack of honest criticism. It has always seemed like there's a WHOLE lot of "I love it! I love it! I love every single thing you have ever even slightly touched!" and a serious lack of "hey... yeah. I don't know, I've seen better from you. Maybe this piece just isn't your greatest". I mean, it happens, people. Not everything you or I make is going to be a winner. While it can be hard to hear, I think any artist could agree with me that it's the people who are this willing to share these honest and sometimes harsh opinions who end up pushing you to go far and beyond what you'd accomplish when only rewarded with pats on the back and puddles of drool. One of my favorite things about being engaged to another artist (oh yeah! did I not mention it? mr josholland gave me the most beautiful ring a few months ago - teehee ;)) BUT, one of my favorite things about our relationship is how NOT scared of saying "that sucks, seriously, start over" to each other we are. Just a few nights ago I think the comment "uh yeah... it's okayyyyy, but that really looks like something I would have done junior year of college" was said, and it was received without any ego bruising at all. Basically it boils down to the fact that if you are an aspiring creative (or a working creative!), and you want to keep getting better and better (as most of us do want - you should probably quit if you don't. seriously), then this kind of honest critique is absolutely necessary. People should welcome it and offer a thanks for it when it happens, because even if it hurts for a little while it will do nothing but fantastic things for you in the long run.

Case in point - the Audrey debate and what I found so lovely about it. I think it's fair to assume that she probably doesn't receive too much criticism too often these days, at least not by her faithful blog readers. I have absolutely heard the argument before that her work can sometimes look too similar to itself and that it'd be nice to see her branch out and try some new directions. I... sometimes agree, sometimes disagree. I love her work. I think she's wonderously talented. I own two of her prints, which are neither easy to nab nor easy on the pocketbook, but I adore them. And today, I adored her even a little bit more, because her response to reading all of these comments (which can't have been easy. I know it must be bumming to get comments like that out of the blue & esp after working so hard to put out new work) was to take it, think about it, and try something a bit new because of it. And, look how lovely the result is. I love that even with how established & successful she is, she is still willing to listen to some anonymous commenter's critique and decide that maybe there's something to it. To me, this is a sign of someone who really truly cares about and loves what they do. I think as artists we are always learning - there is absolutely always room for growth, and the second you lose sight of that is the second you've lost sight of why you started creating in the first place.

I don't know. Long rant, but just something to think about, I guess.

My goal for the next week is to get my sketch nook set up and pour over some art history and art books. I'm in the mood to drool over some painting skills that I can only dream about attaining.

OK, so I'm a little late on the happy new year's, but hopefully your first 19 days of the decade have been wonderful. I'm a busy bee right now prepping for a show in March at C.A.V.E. Gallery out in Venice Beach. I'm pretty excited for what my year has in store work-wise, because as of right now I have literally no pop culture projects on my plate. Don't get me wrong, I love doing the pop culture inspired stuff - it's SO much fun to make paintings about all of the stories you've held preciously throughout your life, but I'd be lying if I didn't say that I'm more than just a little bit excited to get to spend a lot more time exploring my own ideas and imagery for a bit. (This isn't to say that I'm unwilling to take on anything pop culture-ish this year either - I'm just looking forward to a little bit more "me" time.) It should be interesting.

My studio has been in shambles for months now. My ceiling almost caved in from what appeared to have been years of water leakage happening right above my head, and the people responsible for repairing it took their sweet ol' time wrapping up. So, the past few months have been nutty with no proper space to work in and I am very much behind now as a result. The next few weeks should be a madhouse. The fun part though is that once I'm through this project, I get to finish resetting up my workspace and hopefully turn it into a much more useful space than it ever was before. I'm excited!

Anyways, here's a sneak peak of what I'm wrapping up this week. More to come soon!

"The Sorceress"

This is the time of night when I should be sleeping and instead I'm wasting away online while brainstorming for very near and upcoming projects. BUT I've been sitting on this finish for over a week now and I'm afraid I'll forget about it or something stupid like that, so I'm just going to go ahead and post it. I also spent about a gazillion hours on this one, so I'm much too antsy to wait any longer.

This is for 1988 LA's upcoming "Under the Influence: He-Man and the Masters of the Universe" show, opening on January 8th. I came so close to going with She-ra for this, because as a child I was beyond obsessed with her to the point of informing my parents that "I will no longer answer to Shannon, my name is now She-ra, thank you very much." However, I've already done a piece with She-ra in it, so it seemed repetitive. I went with the Sorceress. She's awesome too and her costume is fantabulous.

Hi all, long time no blog - I know I know... I've got a few projects underway and will be posting more about them soon (including a new print possibly on the verrrryy near horizon), but the last month or so has been a tad slower than usual for me, which has actually been nice. Gotta catch up on my z's and recharge at some point, right?

So the holidays are already upon us (where did 2009 go?), and while a lot of people I know really hate on Christmas, the post-Thanksgiving/Christmas/End of Year Holiday season (outside of the rampantly gross over commercialization) has always been my absolute favorite. So, to get in the spirit, here's something to start out the holiday season in the right mindset:

Artist Ana Bagayan is hosting an ebay auction of prints and originals from various artists to benefit her self-created charity "Lunch Bunch". 100% of proceeds goes towards funding the creation and hand delivering of meal packs to the homeless of LA (all done with friends in her spare time!). There's still a week to go, but all starting bids are only 20 dollars and you never know what might happen - there's loads of nice stuff up there! So, diddly on over and take a look-see, get into the spirit of giving and sharing with those who are less fortunate than most this holiday, and pick up a nice print or piece of art for yourself or a loved one all at once.

Beyond Eden Art Fair Part 2

I always get caught up in a mental debate of "do I wait and show my finishes until after their openings or do I just jump the gun and show them now?" Pretty much, I usually end up way too excited about being done with my exceedingly long hours for at least a few days that I just go ahead and post them. Maybe in the future I'll learn to be more secretive, but for now..... meh. So on that note, here are my 3 most recent pieces, done for the Beyond Eden Art Fair, which is happening this weekend - Oct. 9th-11th.

I'm showing with Gallery 1988 LA, and they simply asked for pieces that had some kind of pop culture references within them, since that's what their specialty is. When I do the pop culture stuff I try to choose things that I either really cared about at some point in my life or still feel a deep attachment to. I find that this allows me to keep my voice and my emotions really prominent in the pieces, which is something that is very important to me.

I'll be showing work with Gallery1988 LA at the Beyond Eden Art Fair next weekend. I'll also be flying out there to attend the weekend, because it sounds too awesome to miss and I need some fresh inspiration from artists who are so good that they make me want to quit or start over or lock myself in my studio and never come out. I have work in two shows opening this weekend!

"Now Playing" (which I previewed my work for in my last post) opens this Friday Sept. 18th at Gallery 1988 SF. I was honestly a *bit* skeptical at the onset of this project because I knew how far out of everyone's comfort zones something like this would be, but everything I've seen so far has actually been really fun. It turned out to be a pretty neat experiment and should definitely be a cool show to see!

And "Terrible Yellow Eyes", which is the in the flesh version of Corey Godbey's blog project, is opening this Saturday, Sept. 19th, at Gallery Nucleus. My "Wild Thing" piece from several posts back will be on display. I'm REALLY excited about this show, as this entire project has been a complete delight to follow and the work has been nothing short of absolutely fantastic the whole way through.

Oh, I feel like I've been neglecting my poor blog! I didn't expect to start using my twitter much at all, but the ease of snapping a pic while sitting at my easel and hitting send all within half a minute is really appealing. Much of my progress has been going up over here while it's been happening. So, here's a compiled retro-progress post for the ol' blog. I'll try to be better in the future. :(

MILLIONZZZ of projects going on right now. Can't even begin to explain about how busy I am.

First, this piece is *almost* done. nearing completion. I'm pleased with her and in love with what will be her frame. I think it will end up looking lovely all together.

Second, super early progress pic of the next piece. This one is actually quite a bit further along now, but it's still in the "i look like doodoo" phase, and I'd rather not share that.

Third, just finished this up last night. Sort of a strange/crazy project for Gallery1988 SF's "Now Playing" show, which is rapidly approaching. All artists were given a movie poster (not of our choosing) to paint on and turn into our own image. I got "Magnolia", which I was thrilled about not only because I LOVE that movie, but because the poster was such a lovely image to start with. But... dang, do you know how BIG movie posters are???? I had to improvise and go way simpler with my technique so that I could actually finish this, but I think it turned out alright.

And lastly (just incase you missed it yesterday), I finally released some prints! I'm pretty excited about this as it's something I've really hoped to do for a few years now. They're available here.

I'll post more later about what all these new paintings are for. I've got two more to get underway and done by October, sooo get extra sleep for me. Goodness knows I won't be getting any at all!

and p.s. note to self - all of these compositions are way too similar. Gah! This is what happens when there aren't enough hours in the day, I guess.

Second, the third installment of Crazy4Cult opened last week - always a fun show. This was my contribution, "Little Violet Beauregarde". The framed camera shot is sort of not the greatest, but my own camera wasn't working when I had this piece in my possession so this is all I have. Uh, not that my own shots are usually much better... heh.

...first progress shot of the new piece - there is already a decent amount of paint on the canvas, but it's entirely too messy to show in that state just yet. I am behind, as seems to be the norm for me lately. This piece should come together pretty quickly though, so I'm feeling ok. She'll be part of Rivet's cartoon show, which will be opening in a mere few weeks. I will be a busybee over the next week or so! More images to come soon!

I finished this one up over the weekend. I haven't shown any of my commercial work on here yet (probably because most of my year has been spent on gallery work), but this is generally the type of stuff I get hired to do. It's quite a lot happier than what I do in my personal work! It's fun stuff though, and I'm quite pleased with the way this one turned out.

I had the pleasure of having my "Wild Thing" painting featured over on Terrible Yellow Eyes today! If you have not yet heard of this new project of Cory Godbey's, then it's high time you clickityclick on over there and check out the awesomeness. The work is touching, inspiring, and nothing short of beautiful. I am beyond thrilled to become a part of it.

Cory's personal description of the project: "Terrible Yellow Eyes is a collection of works inspired by the beloved classic, Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak. Over the coming weeks and months I'll display a growing collection of works created by invited contributing artists and myself. We share a love and admiration for Sendak's work and the pieces we present here are done as a tribute to his life and legacy."

I think someone should figure out how to turn this whole thing into a book once it's all done, yeah?

oh and p.s. despite the lack of updates lately, I am actually mindnumbingly busy right now. I'm finishing a book cover this weekend (I'll find out if I'm allowed to post it yet or not - it's coming along pretty nicely!), and then it's on to kicking out three or four more paintings in what will end up being record timing. Three of these do not even exist on the "picture inside my brain" level yet. Gulp.

I've admittedly been taking it easier than I should be lately. I have a whole bunch of projects on the very very near and immediate horizon, so I don't know what my problem is. I like to pretend that I don't need it, but I guess this year has been so hectic that my body has been forcing me to recharge over the last few weeks. Anyhow, new piece - so far titled "The Collector", although that may change. This is for an upcoming group show at C.A.V.E Gallery out in Venice Beach. I'm both nervous and excited about painting this one - the detailing needed in the background is sort of making me cringe, but I'm trying to force myself past my disdain for painting backgrounds with the hopes that it will help elevate my imagery to the place that I'd eventually like to see it go.

It's time for some midnight yoga. I like nighttime the best.

I'm working on a book cover right now and can't really post any of it for awhile, so I just thought I'd use my blog tonight to show off one piece of my very large family... I do have to admit that I come from a pretty talented bunch of kids, so it's not necessarily fair of me to focus on just one, but... whatever. I have 7 siblings, 6 girls+one boy+plus me, which equals eight in all. My brother is 18, graduating high school next month, and heading off to college in the fall to study music (he plays the bassoon, guitar, and probably a whole slew of other instruments too). This week he performed a vocal solo at his high school, and I actually feel pretty bad because somehow I never knew that he had this kind of singing talent. I knew he could sing, but just had no idea what the extent of it was. I guess it's one of the sacrifices you make when you live hundreds of miles away from your family - you really miss out on how the younger ones grow up and the pieces that really make up their lives. Anyways, I almost cry every time I watch this. I know I am biased, but my goodness... the boy can sing.

"Wild Thing", Inspired by the book "Where the Wild Things Are"

And, another project is all wrapped and done. This last piece was so off base from what I usually do, though it was surely a labor of love. Moeshe = coolest monster/wild thing ever? I think so. Look around Gallery 1988's blog next week to see the rest of the show - I know I'm totally psyched to see what everyone came up with.

So, now it's a couple of nights off to recuperate (ahhh), then onto a book cover and three more gallery pieces following it to crank out. Busy year!

Inspired by "Goodnight, Moon", this is my first of two pieces for the upcoming "Beyond the Page" show at Gallery 1988 SF. The "Wild Thing" piece is wrapping up nicely too (hopefully finishing up tonight!), so a post for that will be coming in the next couple of days. Time to get these things in the mail!

And I think I'm developing a raging case of carpal tunnel, so hurray for that.

So normally I'd give it a bit more time before posting another progress shot, but I'm just way too jazzed about how much I got done in one sitting, so here it is. This painting is 15x15, so even though it's still really messy and everything, I think it's pretty decent for one day! Normally I hardly even get everything blocked in during the first sitting sooo..... yay for me :) This piece is also quite a bit different compared to what I've been doing lately, but I'm enjoying it. And it's probably good to occasionally show that I can handle more than just pretty girls, even though pretty girls are definitely my favorite.

And I'll be posting the finish of the "Goodnight Moon" piece soon. I've just got to finish up the little old lady's dress and fingers, and then she's done!

Here's a progress shot of one of my two pieces for Gallery 1988 SF's upcoming children's book show. This book was a staple in my house while growing up - I'm pretty sure my mom actually still has our same beat up copy from like, 30 years ago. It's definitely been put through the ringer over the years too because there were seven kids in that house! Ummm, hopefully people can figure out what it is?

I'm planning on wrapping this one up in the next few days and I'll be starting the second piece this weekend. As always, I'll post more progress soon!

I was looking through my phone and realized that I've started a habit of taking some pretty diligent progress pics of my paintings. Since I'm much too much of a boring sit on my bum for 15 hours at a time noodling away with a 5/0 brush painter to ever make one of those fun painting videos that people have been doing these days, I thought this might be an alright substitute. Well, I think it's fun, but it doesn't take too much to amuse me these days, so who knows! I actually sort of wish I had some pictures of the trouble spots I hit along the way - at one point this gal underwent a total reconstructive nose job because my silly hand drew the thing all crooked and weird in the early stages. I also decided in about the last two hours of painting to ditch the picture frame on the wall behind her - it wasn't really there for any reason anyways.

Two more paintings are due at the end of this month and if my two days of working on them are any indication of how things will turn out, then I'm quite excited to keep going. Images soon!

This is for Gallery 1988's 5 year anniversary show titled "Idiot Box", opening on April 2nd and hosted by Mr. Belding from Saved by the Bell!

I was supposed to be mailing her out today, but we've been hit with a blizzard and it's just crazy out there and everything is shut down anyways, so I guess she's going out tomorrow.

Aside from that, here's a small bit of magic to round out your week. I literally almost cry every time I watch it. And, dare I say it, at the moment I *might* be feeling more excited for this than I am for "Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince" in July, which, if you know anything at all about me, is really saying a lot.

and p.s. if you are a "where the wild things are" fan then I recommend paying attention in the next few weeks. I might be having some Moeshe goodness popping up veryvery soon :)

1. Thanks to everyone who came out to the show two weekends back - I really appreciate the support, and I think things went well. :) If you'd like to check out the work, it's all online here at Rivet's website.

2. Painting progress! As soon as I got back from OH I had to get right back into it, so here's my current piece - messymessymessy and not much to look at just yet, but whatever. It's for Gallery 1988's upcoming "Idiot Box" show. Originally I was going to do something ultra-campy, like maybe "Small Wonder" or "Out of this World" or "My Two Dads" (did they have a giant high heel shoe chair on that show? I remember thinking that chair was SO AWESOME.) Anyhow, once I saw "My So-Called Life" on the suggested list of shows, I just couldn't turn my back on it. After all, I did spend most of adolescence wishing I could BE Angela Chase. The strange truth is that this show actually changed my life way back in the day, so it seemed fitting to work with it. I'm not in love with the painting yet, but then I've still got a ways to go so we'll see what happens.

3. OK, so I don't get offended by people not being into my work or whatever because I think people are entitled to like what they like and that's perfectly ok with me. However, at my show opening and as part of what had to be the most awkward conversation of my life, I received a really strange accusation of framing my "sketchbook pages" because some of the images on the wall had been seen on my "sketch blog". ummmmmm........ I'm just going to clarify here. Usually I am painting. I work during the day and come home and paint until about 2 am almost daily. I don't have much time for recreational sketching at the moment, so I have only been posting progress of images that are intended from the very beginning to be final pieces. Aside from that though, everything starts as a sketch before it can become anything, so it was just a really weird thing to have to defend. However, *just incase* there is any other confusion out there, hopefully I'm clearing it up now.

Oh. and I'll throw in a 4. because.... I finally saw Coraline last night and I am still drooling and recovering from falling so hardcore in love with it! I think working on something like that would be ridiculously fantastic, soooo, Mr. Henry Selick, hit me up if you need a hand with your next stop motion flick. Prettyprettyplease?

i'm going to be realistic and say that this will probably be my last post until this body of work is wrapped up. things are just getting too nutty.

here's my sketch for the next piece - normally i like to work into my sketches and really tighten them up (it's less about the necessity of it and more about the ocd tendencies of mine) but this one i just had to cut the cord and move forward. so, no lingering on pretty line work that no one will ever see or appreciate anyways! honestly, it's probably a good thing for me.

i've never painted curly-q noodle hair before - i'm sort of super excited about it. :)

More Progress!

eeesh. I haven't updated in a week? I meant to be more on top of this, but, well, I've been crazy busy.

Here are some progress shots of what I'm working on. top image = the start, bottom image = some messy but decent progress. It's a bit stark right now, but it'll soften up as I keep going - that's only about 10 hours of paint on there so there's a ways to go still. And yay!... I messed up the painting on the left so no one gets to see it until I start over.

On another ranty note, I watched the documentary My Kid Could Paint That while I was painting last night. Has anyone seen it? Want to weigh in on your thoughts? I'm feeling sort of bad because I can't get behind believing these parents... well, I believe the mom for some reason but something definitely rubs me the wrong way with the dad. Everytime they try to film the little girl painting and she does some normal 4 year old kid thing like paint an ugly spiky sun or mix every color together to make that gorgeous muddy poopie brown color he gets all like "oh gosh realllly she onlyyyy does this when there are camerasss around" or she starts telling him it's his turn to paint and to help her. I don't know. It feels fishy to me? And if they felt so bad about all of the attention and spotlight she was getting then why'd they jump right back into highly publicized gallery shows as soon as the heat blew over? I guess $25,000 a pop is kinda hard to pass up. Who knows... maybe I'm just bitter because this 4 year old girl is enjoying success as an artist that few will ever see and she's not even old enough to comprehend what's going on.

I'm working on another sketch for my next piece right now - if I finish it today perhaps I'll throw it up here. Two posts in one day? Can it really be done?

we always seem to be killing each other

sketch + color study + framing mock-up for my next paintings... I'm hoping to bang both of these out in a week. I'm frame hunting tonight and finishing up painting number 1, which will be a bit of a relief. Time's a ticking and I'm starting to feel it.

I'm not sure what it is with me and blood lately - either I'm going goth or I've become way too obsessed with Dexter. Actually, this piece started as just an image I wanted to draw, but after talking with my Josh about it over lunch today I realized that it had a much more significant meaning and story, and now I'm actually rather in love with it. I have a feeling these girls will be making more appearances in later works.

I drank one beer last night and proceeded to fall asleep right at my drawing desk. Moral of the story is... don't drink and draw, kids! Or, do. Just not when you have a deadline. :)

Just a few more progress shots tonight of the piece I'm spending most of my time on right now. I was hoping to wrap her up today, buttttt..... well. She's decided to be a slower one. These will probably be the last I'll show of this piece until after I show it. What? Did I really just type "last I'll show of this piece until after I show it" ? Whatever. I'm leaving it.

The bottom image is from this morning, and once I saw the shot I took it made me wish I'd thought to paint in that early morning sun shining through the blinds lighting. It looks neat, yeah? I think it's too late to work that into it though, so I'll just have to remember that idea for later. The top picture is where I stopped tonight. Lots of detail noodling today (and lots left to go!), but since I'm not finishing her up before turning in I think it's time to move onto a drawing for a few hours.

hmm... it's always seeming to be about 2:30 am whenever I get around to updating this thing.

I'm really starting this because I gave in to the temptation of my dear friend and super amazing artist, Thom Glick, to take part in a "sketch a day" project as a challenge for the new year. I can't really commit to it just yet because of loads of other work I have going on, but I figure I'll just use this as a way to preview the body of work that I'm devoting my time to right now and maybe once I'm done I'll be in the habit of using this thing enough that I'll actually do it. I'm not confident, but I'll definitely try. Drawing more can only lead to good things, right? And I miss sketchbooking - it used to be my lifeline many years ago until reality and adulthood came banging and clanging into existence.

Anyways, I have a show coming up in Columbus, OH. March 6th, I think? Or is it March 7th? eesh. I should figure that out. I don't want to post too much just yet, but here's a wee small preview sketch of where things are headed. More to come... sometime. Soon(ish). :)
